Excerpt from The Targeting of “ Minority Others” in Pakistan

Price of book including P&P for UK, Europe, Pakistan and US.

Concerning the shameful manner in which many Pakistani Christians and ‘Others’ are denied asylum in the UK, Nasir Saeed notes that:

If any Westerner has any doubt as to the severity of the situation, they need only consider the accusation of blasphemy levelled against an 8th grade pupil at a school near Abbottabad because she misspelled a word in a class test. The school’s decision to expel her only proves the extent to which the blasphemy laws are being misused. Yet, the British Government appears almost determined not to let any asylum seeker in, no matter how desperate or endangered their lives back home are. From the moment they submit their application for

asylum, Pakistani Christians have a tough time convincing the Border Agency that returning to their homeland is life threatening.

Thank you for reading this and please know that your sharing, liking and commenting on this post goes a long way in helping to give voice to the persecuted.

All proceeds from the sale of the book support the work of the BPCA.  Much of the early sales will be used to support victims of the Peshawar bomb attacks - December 2013.

Army forces out Christians resident for a century

The Army Camp at Landi Kotal over 100 years ago under the British Empire

Christians in an army camp were forced last month to leave their homes, in which they and their ancestors had resided for nearly 100 years by the army.  Landi Kotal, which is right on the lawless border with Pakistan, in the semi-autonomous tribal areas, has a base, previously occupied by the British, and now by Pakistan's Frontier corps, aka the Khyber Rifles.

The land was given to the Khugagel tribe for 100 years by the British in 1914.  However, the army says the lease is up now, or that most of the Christians are there without official permission.  The Christians say that Khyber Rifles personnel arrived on Sunday 14th at their church in the camp during prayer time, armed with batons and sticks, and ordered the Christians to vacate their homes immediately.  The only ones allowed to stay were those who were army employees - typically cleaners.  The Christians say they had no prior warning.

The local administration says 30 families were there without permission and were asked to leave, and claimed that they had given several written notices beforehand, and that the Christians ignored them.  These were families of people who had retired from army service.  Arshad Masih, a leader of Christians in the township said there were only 40 cleaner positions, and all the other Christians were jobless, especially as they did not have the 'tribal domicile and computerised national identity card of FATA' (Federally Administered Tribal Areas).

The Christians cannot purchase land to build new homes, as most land in the area is under dispute.  Families have been split up, with the women and children having to stay in hotels or with relatives in other towns.  The Christians have repeatedly asked for the decision to be reversed, and have staged protests about the evictions.  In the cold climates on the Western fringes of the Himalaya mountain range, the Christians demand to know:

'Where will the poor go now that winter is approaching?'

Christians machine-gunned in Karachi

Nasir Masih

Rafi Masih

These are two most recent fatalities of the slow massacre of Christians in Essa Nagri, Karachi.  According to local human rights workers, heavy machine guns and advanced weaponry were used in the attack.  Naturally, the community is even more depressed and distraught, even though an FIR has been lodged, as they don't expect any action, just like there has been none in the last two fatal attacks this month, due to police being intimidated by the strength of the terrorists in the area.
Liaquat Munawir of MASS called for police to search the area around Essa Nagri to seek out the perpetrators.  He is also calling on all human rights and Christian groups as well as governments and the UN to put pressure on the Pakistani Government to protect the Christians in Essa Nagri.

Wilson Chowdhry of the BPCA said;

"The lawlessness in Karachi is already well documented, yet in recent weeks it seems that what little rule of law existed in the region, has now been completely removed. Suffering Christians of Essa Nagri seem to be the worst hit community in the area.  The large amount of extortion money that has been exacted from them has left many penniless and homeless and others simply biding time till the same fate befalls them.  Unless the government intervenes to assist this beleaguered community, I fear that just like the former population of Jews living in Karachi, Christians will be forced to flee entirely.  Their their possessions and property will simply be looted and usurped by the avarice Muslim mobs already calling for their complete annihilation."

Christians shot dead, chocolate teapot police

Map of Karachi showing Essa Nagri

We have received news from Karachi that yesterday yet another Christians was shot dead in Essa Nagri.  MASS have told us that at 4:20am on 12th September, Muslim terrorists again entered the Christian slum community of Essa Nagri and opened fire, killing Yousaf Masih, son of Inyat Masih.    The inhabitants are depressed and disturbed as the police, law enforcement agencies do nothing to stop these repeated and continuous attacks on the colony.  They are calling for prayer for the tormented Christians of the region.  We reported on recent events where police tear-gassed and shot Christians resulting in one death and several injuries.

Sources  1, and MASS reports by Facebook

In addition, several weeks ago a Muslim gang in Faisalabad attacked and shot Yaqoob Masih, a Christian.  He has now died of his injuries in hospital.  His family are protesting because, once again, the police have taken no action against the Muslim gang.

Sexual abuse of Christian boys and girls in Essa Nagri

Map of Karachi showing Essa Nagri

While researching the background of attacks, extortion and intimidation in the Christian slum of Essa Nagri that led to the current events and violence the BPCA found an article from January describing the situation that the Christians of Essa Nagri and other Christian areas of Karachi face.  Because of their minority status, they are especially vulnerable to abuse of various kinds.  Activists of rival political parties extort money from them, they are caught in the middle of vicious political battles for land, kidnap and forcible conversion of both young and adults is common, and even Members of State Assemblies face death threats and have nowhere to turn.  But a further element is extortion by sexual abuse of children.  As dusk falls, all children are whisked away out of sight, with good reason.  For at least a year, children are being abducted and then abused at a nearby building known as the Meekasa Apartments.

A resident of Essa Nagri, Peter Bhatti, reports that the children are filmed being abused, and then the families extorted for money.  If they don't pay, the videos will be circulated.  One woman, Shakila Anjum, had her two teenage sons abducted and abused in such a manner.  She got calls warning her not to tell the police.  The families have no choice but to raise the money, which is difficult for the already impoverished residents.  Thus the Christian community is deliberately kept in enforced poverty by abuse, extortion and murder by the extremists / criminals (is there much of a difference in Pakistan - as the saying goes, the bigger the beard, the bigger the crook).  And the police and society do nothing or aid it.  Silence is complicity!

1 killed, many injured in police backed Muslim land grab near Lahore

Victim of Muslim land grab

We have reports of yet another violent Muslim land grab.  We don't have any further details, not even names of victims.  Once again, influential Muslims have attacked vulnerable Christians to take their land, shooting many - one victim was killed (pictured here), and another was kidnapped, another with serious gunshot wounds, and 5 others also injured.  The crime happened near Phool Nagar, a large town some 20 miles south west of Lahore.

An FIR has been registered with the police, but the police keep making lame excuses to avoid arresting the influential perpetrators, not least because this theft of 40 acres of land was aided and abetted by police officials, again a far from unknown circumstance.

Pakistan and Zardari listen up!

Here are some slogans that need to be heard
To highlight the wicked and absurd

Pakistan how many innocents have to die
Until you kiss bigotry goodbye?

Pakistan coward state,
Leaving victims to their fate.

Pakistan, we've given you ten thousand chances
How many more disabled have to do their deathly dances?

And to Zardari and the politicians in Pakistan, we are sick of empty words and worthless promises.  Actions and deeds, consistently over time are the only things that will satisfy us.

Words are worthless, words are cheap
A pattern of deeds is what we seek.

Your words are cheap, they cut no ice
Until you truly save a life.

Until you stand for the rights of all,
Your words are fake, they only appal.

Your empty promises do not count, we are witness
What you really do shows your moral fitness

While our lives are cheap, your words are too
Only a real change will do.

Any old fool can request a report
It takes a real man to do what he ought.

Secret plea from victim of blasphemy laws

The family of this Pakistani Christian rights activist secretly videoed his plea for help, under the noses of the prison guards.  The interview is from about 0:55 on, and shows the desperate situation and how effective false accusations of blasphemy, particularly against bread-winners.  In addition it tells of the mistreatment (denial of medication, discrimination and torture) he suffers in prison.

In addition BPCA has seen plea's for prayer for the bail hearing of Mr.Khuram Masih, who has been falsely charged with blasphemy and held in prison for 9 months.  His hearing is in Lahore High court on the 28th of August.

Flight of a flag of false offence

A patriotic family of Christians in Karachi preparing yesterday (8th) for Pakistan's approaching Independence day have paid the price for honouring their nation by false accusations of dishonouring it and blasphemy against Allah.  The whole Christian community in that neighbourhood are threatened with being burned out by Muslim mobs stirred up by hate speech from local mosques.

The family had been washing a Pakistani flag, ready to put it up or hang it out for Independence Day.  Unfortunately it blew away in the wind and landed on a neighbours house.  Even more unfortunately, it was a Muslim neighbour who, leading instantly to claims of blasphemy.  Because the flag had the phrase 'May Allah protect the beloved land' the neighbours had the opportunity not only to claim that the Christians had deliberately thrown it and have disgraced the name of Allah, but they went on to fabricate claims that the Christians had used the flag as a rug, so that they sat on the name of Allah.

There are 15 Christian families in the neighbourhood, known as Qatil Garhi, and after the incident was reported in the local mosques, they are very afraid, because the local Muslims are gathering and using the alleged 'insult' to threaten to burn out all the Christians.

Please pray for them, for peace in every way

From darkness to light.... for one, for many?

Julie Aftab - survivor, example of God's ability to 'work out all things for good'

Julie Aftab was a fun loving child who had to leave school at age 12 to work 13 hour days to support her family.  She described it as the worst day of her life, as she dreamed of going to college.  At work, she always wore her cross.  Age 16, this offended someone (some sources also say that her refusal to be in a relationship was also a factor in what happened), and she was at work when one man burst in and threw acid at her from a distance, then another pulled her by the hair from behind and poured acid on her face and down her throat.  She lost teeth, her cheek and an eye in the attack.  She was rushed to hospital, but many refused to treat her for fear of retaliation by the perpetrators.  Those that were willing to treat her started skin grafts, some of them without anaesthetic.

Typically, her attackers were never brought to justice and still walk free.  Her attacker falsely claimed that Julie had blasphemed against Islam to justify his actions and to put pressure on her - her life was still in danger  She barely escaped alive after a man tried to shoot her.  She moved her head just enough when her mum called out a warning, but she was hit with bullets in the head and the stomach

A sponsor arranged for her to go to the US, where she had to undergo 27 operations.  She spoke no English, but started to go to school, and later became the first person in her family to go to college.  She works in a store to support her family still.  She has also raised funds to build a safe house in Pakistan.  'Before I wanted to save peoples bodies' (as a doctor) she says, 'but now I want to save souls'.

Her life is a picture of Jesus teaching on forgiveness, and a radiant beauty that is beyond skin deep, and she recently got engaged as well as being about to graduate, not from college, but from university!

Christian nurse kidnapped by colleague and his friend who used rape video to blackmail and attempt forcible conversion to Islam

Crime Scene - Lahore hospital

Two months ago, a supposed colleague and 'friend' raped a Christian nurse. Shiasta Samuel, a 27 year old nurse in the SIMS hospital in Lahore, thought she was friends with the chief perpetrator, Ali Adnan, who had an admin role at the hospital. He quite often visited her family. But then he started acting differently, criticising Christian women for not following Muslim dress codes and 'following their own religion'. He then told Miss Samuel that he liked her and she should convert to Islam and marry him, but she refused, citing the fact that she was married and they were of different faiths. Adnan then started harrassing her at home and work, including blocking her way at work, threatening her family if she did not marry him and then setting their house on fire.

Then on 21st of August 2011 he came up behind her and forced her into a car in the car park, saying not to make a fuss as it would be embarrassing for her and that he wanted to 'just clear up some misunderstanding'. As they came to the carpark an accomplice came and put a gun to her head. They raped her and videoed the assualt, and then brought her back, telling her that if she told anyone about the rape, they would send the film to her family and upload it on social networking sites. For a while she complied, to spare her family shame, but Adnan started ringing up to blackmail her. He said she had to convert to Islam, and only then would he 'forgive' her for refusing his proposal. When she refused, he started demanding sexual favours and again threatened to come and show the film to her family, which he then did when she refused.

He told her family that they had no other option but to 'hand her over' to him because he 'owned' her now. This presented the family a terrible dilemma and illustrates the situation faced by Christian women in perverse Pakistani society - in that it is victims of rape who are shamed and publicly pilloried in Pakistan, not the perpetrators. They bravely and commendably decided to report the incident to the police. Those of you who have read this blog for some time will not be surprised at what happened next. The police deliberately gave the perpetrators time to get 'pre-arrest bail' and they fled their homes, even though the victims family went to the police every day to press them to take the statements of the accused. They used delaying tactics and started asking the victim ridiculous questions, thus continuing the trauma she had endured. At work there were constant accusing stares, and eventually she took leave. The administration has set up a committee to probe the affair, but no-one from her work has contacted her.

First of all we would like to applaud the family for seeking justice and not remaining silent, a brave decision, especially since they had to know the police were likely to be difficult. This story amply demonstrates the depraved nature of much of Pakistani society, where Christians feel they have no choice but to put up with the kind of behaviour the rapist (so-called 'friend') displayed against them in their own homes even before the crime, and where the victims of sexual violence are treated as criminals and social pariah's and the perpetrators go free. We can also see how the massive power imbalance is used to try and use rape and shame and blackmail to coerce Christian women to convert. The fact that police so often mirror society's oppression of Christians means criminals feel they can attack Christians with impunity.

Egyptian military kills a score or more Christians

Once again we have to report on the sad deterioration of conditions for Christians in Egypt. Since the so-called 'Arab Spring' something like 100,000 Copts have fled Egypt, with many more who would leave if they could, rather reminiscent of the situation in Pakistan.

Now, after yet another church burning, a peaceful protest by young Copts outside the TV studio degenerates when unknown thugs attack it with rocks and firebombs, and the army and police move in with tear gas and batons and bullets. Result : at least 23 dead, 200 injured, most of them Christian, including those run over by armoured vehicles. Here are the videos showing something of the horror and the sustained brutality against the Christian victims.

For an account of what happened to spark this brutality, including a baying mob of 3000 Muslims destroying a church after Friday prayers, read what this Egyptian Christian had to say about the events in Egypt. The military is openly aiding and abetting the Salafists and terrorists in destroying churches and attacking Christianity

Young Christian experience of discrimination in Pakistan

Yesterday an article was posted online on a new site It provides a small window onto the daily discrimination and harrassment that Christians receive in the realm of education, and also work, and something of the pressure and mental distress this causes.
The article, entitled 'Why is this discrimination' starts by quoting several verses from the bible about loving your neighbour as yourself, loving the foreigner in the midst, and several sura's from the Quran that talk about not fighting with those who don't fight the Muslims, and harmony between tribes.
Then it talks about the discrimination faced by Christian young people. It notes that in terms of jobs, although they are supposed to be on merit, especially in government, this does not happen. 'Minorities day' instituted because of the work of the martyr Minister Shabhaz Bhatti, is honoured on the day, but not in the laws to end discrimination - not in effective action. To date, it has been mere tokenism. Promotions aren't given to Christians - or at least, if they are, they are the subject of intrigues and conspiracies to 'cut them down to size'. In state schools, the Christians are treated harshly by the teachers, and loose heart - often fleeing school. At college and university they are discriminated against, and not given good grades unless they convert to Islam - leading to depression and lack of application to studies due to hopelessness.
And the discrimination is seen in the job adds in the newspapers. The lowest and dirtiest jobs are always reserved for Christians only.

This facet of discrimination is one reason why BPCA want's funding and donations to set up bursaries to support Christian children and see to it that they are dealt with fairly in the state school system, with agents on the ground to monitor what goes on in the schools.

Pukhtoon Fundamentalist Attacked My Brother this is my Appeal for Prayer and Peace

Ashfaq Munawar another Karachi Christian Attacked for his belief!

I received disturbing news of a man attacked simply for being Christian. This is another attack from the lawless city of Karachi. It is about time the Pakistan Government recognised their responsibility to protect all their citizens. I call on those reading this story to contact your MP's or statesmen from your home countries and to call for a concerted effort to eradicate such obvious human right abuses. The writer says he is the brother of the victim and I produce the story prima facie (sic):

by Liaquat Munawar Munawar Masih on Monday, August 15, 2011 at 10:59pm

On 14th august at 6:30am near sea view D.H.A( defence housing authority ) phase 8,jurisdiction of Durkhshan police station Karachi, Pakistan, Pakhtoon fundamentalists attacked my brother Ashfaq Munawar.

Ashfaq is seriously injured, he has fractures on both jaws, and he lost 5 teeth.

Today 15th august, when he regained consciousness and informed me about his attack. He said;

"I was coming from Sea View the beach site of Karachi sea, after celebration of our country's Independence Day, ( because people's of all Karachi gathered there and celebrate different event's ). Six Pukhtoon fundamentalists stopped me and they asked me if I were a muslim or Christian, I said I am by birth Christian they said,"Kalma Parho" (read the Kalma it's an important verse for Muslims), and become a muslim. I refused, then they shouted at me. I told them I will never ever become a muslim. Then they beat me badly with iron rods and iron hand clips. When I lay down on the floor they thought I had died and they fired into the air with heavy weapons, and also crushed my motor bike with iron rods. They left me alone there as they made a getaway due to the attention the gunfire had caused. Police arrived at the scene they also beat me and took my motor bike to the Police station. They left me alone there. Fortunately one of my neighbour was going from that way he put me on Taxi and brought me home".

I request to all my Christian friends, brothers, and sisters kindly pray for my brother and my family, because we are in trouble my entire family is tense and our organization members are very depressed...

PS. For those of you on facebook, the article is on Liaquat's 'Notes' and you can read the original there.

Where it's even worse.....

In the last post we talked about the latest case of the kidnap of Christian girls and their rape, forced conversion and marriage in Pakistan, and noted that it was happening at the rate of (at least) one a week. Spare a thought for our brothers and sisters, the Copts of Egypt. After the 'Arab Spring' Wahhabi and Salafist movements have mushroomed with funding from Saudi Arabia. These groups are paying Muslims per convert. Unsurprisingly, the rate of abduction has shot up in past while. In one city alone the rate is 2-3 per day. Muslim University students are encouraged to get close to and sexually violate Coptic girls in the age range of 9 to 15. The tactic is to sexually blackmail them and shame them in front of their parents (photographs etc) to coerce them to run away and thus be more vulnerable. They are coerced into converting and marrying.
Salafist groups, police and state security combine to provide a strong infrastructure. The girls are held in houses procured especially for the purpose, the police refuse to pay attention to the girls families. And the Salafi groups have set up a group to deliberately counter and smear the efforts of the Coptic community to get the girls back. The Orwellian titled 'Alliance for the Support of New Muslim Females' has staged against the Coptic church, accusing it of kidnapping girls who have converted to Islam.

This new tactic explains why by far the highest proportion of 'converts' to Islam are from young and underage Coptic women. It can't even be (fully) blamed on normal Islamic practice, since it is deemed alright for the husband, the head of the house, to be a Muslim while his wife isn't. It is only deemed detestable if the 'subservient' wife is a Muslim and the husband is not. Thus these events cannot be about some kind of Romeo-Juliet romances across the religious divide. The goal is not the marriage of in love couples but the open promotion of sexual coercion and blackmail to induce conversion to Islam.

Elements of the security forces, courts, police, University officials and Muslim clergy are openly promoting and facilitating this policy. The supposedly 'pious' Muslims are engaging in mass rape and paedophilia and teaching their followers to do the same.

Even before the Revolution such practices were widespread, with tactics used including telling Christian women that their fathers were seriously ill in hospital and asking for them, and then snatching them off the street as they rushed to the hospital, or straight grabbing them from the street and aneasthatising them, marrying them in this condition, gang raping them for weeks, and then divorcing them. Fathers who protest have been accused of 'promoting sectarian strife' by the police and had their homes stolen from them.

Even where such girls are taken into state care homes (in one recent case it seems the girls claimed that they had freely converted to Islam because they feared retribution from their own families) there is intense intimidation, often with no Christian presence in such institutions, and the machinations of Sharia associations and threatening by Hijab encloaked social workers.

For more information see here, here and here.
