There is a significant movement towards rather ground breaking changes to the Blasphemy Laws. The Blasphemy Laws have for too long been an opportunity to subjugate minority groups in Pakistan. In a recent press release it would seem that Shahbaz Bhatti is insinuating that legislative changes making it a prerequisite for judges to investigate cases before the issue of an "First Incident Report" could soon be introduced. Moreover, new punitive measures for the misrepresentation or falsifying of evidence with intent to convict an innocent - should provide more protection to minority groups and others who are targeted.
These additional processes will be a step in the right direction but Human Rights activists must not let this small victory, when implemented, divert them from our real purpose of abrogating the laws in their entirety.
